Good afternoon, World of Pokemon!

For anybody that doesn't know, I'm Jimmy Darling. I'm twenty five, and I'm a Pokemon Trainer and stock boy in Goldenrod. I got a house here, share it with a buddy of mine. It's a nice house. I got a ton of Pokemon. High level guys, well trained. I've got a bike, it's in great condition. I've got a kicking sense of humor. I can sing like an angel, juggle like nobody's business, and I may got mitts like a krabby, but they don't slow me down any!

I'm one hell of a swell guy! But there's one thing missing...

So what's a guy gotta do to get a date around here?

[Because after a year of going it entirely solo, why not just pitch himself over the network at large and see if anything happens?]

I dunno, maybe. There's all kinds of girls from all kinds of places.

I've never had a problem with my technique before! Not like this.

That's why I'm saying it might be cultural. It's been hard adjusting to the norms here compared to the twenty-sixth century, but geography plays a part, too.

Yeah, I guess it's been kind of hard to adjust, but honestly it seems like most people come from places way more open and relaxed about dating than I do.

I'm from 1950, if I haven't mentioned it.

Oh, huh. Well, that's not so far off from this place, far as I can tell.

But yeah, guess I've had similar conversations with other people about the different romantic climes. So were the rules that rigid in 1950, man?

It is and it isn't? I mean, I recognize plenty of stuff, but then plenty of stuff is like space age machines and medicine, so...

Dating and sex and all that, yeah. Society's got all kinds of ideas about who can be with who, and how you gotta behave till you're married. Mostly about women, which is pretty shitty. Not that people really do it, but everybody pretends like they do and gets all messed up over it.

Sorry I went private, but I figure there's some stuff the ladies listening in might not need to hear.

I used to make extra cash, 'entertaining' bored married broads at Tupperware parties. You'd think I was a spy, the way they'd sneak me in through the back. And they'd keep the lights out and pretend like it was some...stress relief thing. Like I was a machine at a doctor's office or something, because god forbid women admit they enjoy sex or a good looking guy making'em feel special.

Hell, I've had dads pull guns on me just for talking to their daughters. I mean, that's 'cause of my hands, I got a defect thing, but....it's cause they figure I'm a 'bad guy', cause I'm a freak and I'm a biker and I'm clearly some sex crazed maniac who's gonna assault their precious princesses. And god help a girl who gets a 'bad reputation'.

So...yeah. It's a hell of a lot different.

...Damn, dude. Sounds like you had a real exciting life back home, huh? Don't blame you for looking to get a girlfriend in a more, ah, open time and place.

Man, I can't even imagine the women I know putting up with any of that crap. South would've wrenched someone's head off before she finished high school.

Not until just before I left, actually! I spent my life as a side show performer, traveling up and down the east coast. Mostly the 'exciting' shit was getting run out of town or accused of stuff I didn't do. Then when I was like seventeen or eighteen some drunk housewives offered me some cash to, uh...see what I could do with mitts like these.

[He holds up his fused, lobster like hands.]

So I just kept doing it. The show didn't pay much, I wanted to save up and get my ma a nice place.

And I had girlfriends that were like me, freak show people don't give a shit about what society says. But I only ever knew one normal girl who was into me, and...I don't think she really was. I'd really kinda like that, you know?

Sounds like my best friend, Amazon Eve. Tallest and strongest woman in the world. Our strongman tried something with her, she beat the hell out of him! Nobody messes with Evie. It's all bullshit, the whole 'man's the master of the house, women should be seen and not heard' thing. My ma was smarter than any guy I ever knew, ran a house better, too.

[He nods along with Jimmy's story. Those decisions make sense to him, yeah.]

Yeah, all the ladies in my squad would take serious issue with that. Our best soldier in the whole program was a woman. Hell, both our number ones were.

[Sorry, Texas. It's not that York means to forget her, but Carolina's always going to be the number one in his mind.]

It's hard to believe folks still think that about girls even in my time. That they can't kick just as much ass as us guys, I mean. If not more. Your Evie, I bet she'd get along well with Carolina.

Good for them. I trusted Evie to watch my back more'n anybody. She punches harder and takes a punch better than anyone I know.

I don't even get how people can think that kind of stuff. Do they spend any time with actual women? Talk to'em? Listen to'em? Did everybody forget that when all the guys went off to the big war, it was the women doing all the hard work and sports for'em?

Sounds like they would! Evie always felt kinda...different than the other girls. 'Cause she's so big and tough and smokes and drinks and gets along better with guys. She and my ma get on great, but my ma was a bearded lady so....

Gender roles kinda just fall apart in the side show circuit.

If it helps, by my time, there's as many women in the trenches as there are men. Not that I'm saying war's a good thing, but at least we're egalitarian about who's got the right to fight 'em now.

I bet Evie woulda done great on our squad. You know if she could shoot worth anything?

Good to know things get better. I mean, on how everybody sees women, I mean.

Sounds like it! I dunno about shooting, but she was pretty good with a set of knives or a sword...

A sword? I wasn't aware those were still in use in the 1950's.

It was part of the act! She can belch a hell of a flame, too.
